Airplanes

Airplanes

The modern airplane works by using a jet engine to create forward motion (thrust) accompanied by lift created by the wings. Since ancient times the human species dreamed of flying, and many Greek legends (Icarus, for example) reflect this passionate interest. It wasn't until the Wright Brothers successfully made the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight on 12/17/03, that the dream became a reality.

About Airplanes

Airplane travel is more common than ever in the United States. Though air travel tends to fall with a recession, it starts creeping back up when people have money to spend again.

Between August 2008 and July 2008, nearly 42 percent of U.S. adults reported traveling by air for leisure trips. 48 percent traveled for business in 2009. (Source: travelhorizonsTM, July 2009)
