About Albums

The term "record album" originated from the early phonograph disc records that were kept in a bound container resembling a photograph album.

The first collection of music to be called an "album" was Tchaikovsky's ‘Nutcracker Suite,’ which was released in April, 1909 as a four-disc set by Odeon Records.

The UK charts define an album as a recording with more than four songs, or with a running time of more than 25 minutes. If it’s shorter, it is usually called an EP. When it becomes too long, an album is called a double album, or box set.
