Alexandria, Virginia is one of the oldest cities in the United States having first been established as part of the English Colony of Virginia in 1695.
Alexandria is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 2012, the city had a total population of 147,391. Located along the Western bank of the Potomac River, Alexandria is approximately six miles (9.6 kilometers) south of downtown Washington, D.C.
