Alice in Chains rose to fame during the grunge movement in the early 1990’s along with other Seattle bands Nirvana and Pearl Jam. AIC was one of the most successful music acts of the 1990’s, selling over 35 million albums worldwide. The original singer, Lanye Staley, died of a drug overdose in 2002.

Known for: Original sound, often mislabeled as grunge, Lanye Staley’s Snarl to Scream’ vocals, Dark Lyrics.’

After calling it quits from his original band Sleeze in 1986, Lanye Staley assembled Alice in Chains. Originally the band performed covers of Slayer and Armored Saint songs, with little intention of creating their own material. During this time Stanley met guitarist Jerry Cantrell while working at Music Bank rehearsal studios where the two soon became friends and shared a living/rehersal space. The duo soon began recording material under the name Alice in Chains.

Alice in Chains first album Facelift’ was released August 21, 1990 and peaked at #42 on the billboard charts which was helped by MTV playing their video for Man in a Box on a daily basis. Facelift’ was followed by the 5 song EP Sap’ in 1992 which features Chris Cornell of Soundgarden. Alice in Chains wrote most of their material for their third album, Dirt,’ while on the road touring. 'Dirt' became AIC’s highest selling album and included the hits, Rooster, them Bones, and Down in a Hole. During the summer of 1993, Alice in Chains toured with the music festival Lollapalooza, their last major tour with Staley. Following their world tour in 1993, the band entered the studio to record their fourth album Jar of Flies.’ The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, becoming the first EP to top the charts.

In 1996, Alice in Chains performed on MTV's 'Unplugged.'

Singer Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002 and the band broke up shortly after

In 2006, the band reunited for a benefit concert with several guest musicians filling in on vocals. Shortly after, They announced they were reforming with William Duvall on lead vocals. Alice in Chains put out a brand new album titled 'Black Gives Way to Blue' on September 25, 2009.
