Alternative Medicine

Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine is medicine not normally practiced by conventional doctors. Herbal remedies, yoga, massage, and mineral supplements can fall into this category.

About Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine, also known as complementary therapy, is defined as therapeutic practices, not considered an integral part of conventional allopathic medical practice.

Some alternative medicine methods, such as physical therapy, diet, and acupuncture have become widely accepted. Therapies are termed as complementary when used in addition to conventional treatments and as alternative when used instead of conventional treatment.

Alternative therapies include, but are not limited to the following disciplines: folk medicine, herbal medicine, diet fads, homeopathy, faith healing, new age healing, chiropractic, acupuncture, naturopathy, massage, and music therapy.

Studies suggest that individuals that have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, arthritis, cancer, back pain, and other medical conditions seek out these therapies.

Alternative medicine practices are grouped into broad categories, such as natural products, mind body medicine practices that focus on the interactions among the brain, mind, body and behavior with the intent to use the mind to affect physical functioning and promote health. Some examples are meditation and yoga.

Natural products are also considered alternative medicine such as the use of a variety of herbal medicines (also known as botanicals), vitamins and minerals. Many are sold over the counter as dietary supplements.

Be aware that some dietary supplements may interact with medications or other supplements, may have side effects of their own, or may contain potentially harmful ingredients not listed on the label. Also, keep in mind that most supplements have not been tested in pregnant women, nursing mothers, or children. Be sure to tell all your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use.
