Amendments

Amendments

A constitutional amendment is a change to the constitution of a nation or state. For the US Constitution, it must be ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures or constitutional conventions elected in each state. Amendments are applied to the body of the text without altering or removing what already exists.

About Amendments

The process for adding an amendment to the Constitution is proposal then ratification. The process is difficult as it requires a vast majority of supporters to be made into law. There have been 10,000 proposed constitutional amendments since 1789, with fewer making it past Congressional committee and even less making the leap to the House of Representatives floor.

Two-Third of state legislatures can demand for a constitutional amendment, where congress would call for a constitutional convention. However, this has never occurred in the history of the United States. Nor is there anything in the Constitution that discusses the conduct or policy.
