American Family Insurance is an insurance company that offers a variety of products such as life, health, auto, home and business insurance. About American Family Insurance
The history of American Family Insurance began with a man named Herman Wittwer, who was a struggling insurance salesman that had a vision that a company could make money by selling auto insurance to farmers in Wisconsin. Wittwer understood the idea of assessing risk and using that knowledge to determine insurance premiums.
With this knowledge, Wittwer started Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance in 1927. Throughout the years, the market grew from farms and rural areas to large metropolitan areas. By 1963, the company changed its name to American Family Mutual Insurance to reflect the expanding product base that it was offering.
American Family Insurance currently operates in 19 states from Washington to Ohio and has over $4.8 billion in policyholder equity.
