Android

Android is an operating system (OS) for smartphones. Android was purchased by Google in 2005, and is based on a modified version of the open source Linux kernel. The Android system was designed to compete with Apple iOS and has since passed iOS in terms of market share. The latest version is Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) which adds features like multitasking, face-recognition, cloud storage, and 'Android Beam' (tap-to-share).

About Android

The Android mobile operating system is a version of Linux that was developed by Android Inc., and purchased by Google. It now belongs to the Open Handset Alliance, a business alliance of 65 technology businesses who are developing open standards for mobile. On September 23, 2008 Google released the Android 1.0 SDK for developers to create applications for use on the Android OS.

After the release of the Android operating system several phone makers picked it up and added it to their phones. The first phone to include Android was the HTC Dream which was released on October 22, 2008. Many people took the release of the Android OS and the HTC Dream as being a competitor with the Apple iPhone.

There are currently a number of devices running the Android OS including mobile phones, ebook devices, and internet tablets. Some include the Archos 5, Droid, Nook, HTC Dream, G1, the myTouch, Nexus One, and many more. Google is constantly tweaking the OS to make it more accessible and easier for developers to make new apps and port others from the iPhone's App Store.

Google later released Android OS 2.2 codenamed Froyo. Along with being much faster, Froyo added more features to make the overall experience better. One big feature is the ability to connect to Google's Chrome browser. Now all the saved passwords, links, text, and numbers to the phone with a single click and thanks to Android2cloud web pages on the phone can be opened in Chrome.

Android 2.2 Froyo was replaced by 2.3 Gingerbread, and then a new version was released for tablets called 3.0 Honeycomb. The latest version is Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which adds a whole host of new features.
