Army National Guard

Army National Guard

The Army National Guard has its roots in the American Colonies, as early as 1636. The Guard has taken a greater and greater role in fighting modern U.S. wars, including Iraq and Afghanistan.

About Army National Guard

The Army National Guard has fought in every war that the United States has been in. It has its earliest origins in the American colonies dating back to 1636, making it the oldest branch of the US military. The Army National Guard and the National Guard are two names for the same service.

Top 3 National Guard Priorities:
1. The security and defense of our homeland, at home and abroad.
2. Support the Global War on Terrorism here and abroad.
3. America insists on a relevant, reliable and ready National Guard that is transformed for the 21st Century.
The Army National Guard can be called into active service by either the state or federal governments. National Guard ranks are the same as that of the regular Army. They include Enlisted ranks, Warrant Officer ranks, Company Grade Officer ranks, Field Grade Officer ranks and General Officer ranks.

The Army National Guard is currently participating in Iraq and makes up a majority of the forces there. Afghanistan is in need of the Guard because of heavy attacks from insurgents.

The National Guard also includes an Air National Guard. Air National Guard has served since the early 1920’s even though it wasn’t officially recognized as its own branch until 1947.

How Long Would I Serve in the National Guard?

The regular enlistment period is 8 years. However Guard Soldiers may serve as little as 3-6 years, if they spend the reminder of their service period in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR). In that status they won't train with a unit, but could be called up in the event of an emergency. If your unit is not deployed overseas, the usual commitment is to serve one weekend of drill per month and one annual training period of two weeks' duration.

How Do I Enlist in the National Guard?

Not everyone can qualify for the National Guard. If you want to enlist you'll need to:

1. Contact a National Guard representative and fill out a form. There is no obligation.

2. Take the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test. This will assess your strengths and help the Guard find the best capacity for you to serve.

3. Enlist in the National Guard, which includes the following steps:

* Get a physical exam with a Guard doctor
* Receive a Basic Combat Training date
* Get confirmation of the job you've selected.
* Get any benefits and bonuses approved
* Take an Oath of Enlistment

4. Attend Recruit Sustainment Program (RSP) for one weekend a month to learn Guard rules and systems, and start fitness and classroom training. You will be in RSP until your ship date, which could be anywhere from a few weeks to several months after you enlist.

5. Ship to Basic Training
