Ashanti is an American R&B, Hip Hop, and Soul singer and songwriter, and actress. Growing up, Ashanti sang in her church's choir. As a teenager her love for music was obvious to her mother. She wrote her own music and chose to study dance. By all accounts her dancing career was successful. She performed at prestigious locations such as Carnegie Hall, The Apollo Theater, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Black Spectrum Theater.

Because of money issues at home which did not allow her to record a demo, Ashanti had to perform her music and dancing live for talent agents. At fourteen years old, she had two promising record deals, one with P.Diddy's Bad Boy Records and another with Jive Records. Both fell apart. But in 2002 she signed with Murder Inc. as a vocalist to accompany the label's rappers. Featured on both Fat Joe's What's Luv? and Ja Rule's Always on Time, Ashanti became the first female vocalist to appear at the #1 and #2 spots simultaneously on the Hot 100.

Her self-titled debut album 'Ashanti' was released in 2002, featuring the hit Foolish. Her first album set the record for the fastest selling album for a new female artist with 503,000 albums sold in its first week. Since then, Ashanti has released Chapter II (2003), Concrete Rose (2004), and The Declaration (2008).

Ashanti started to act in movies and television in 2005. She has appeared in 'Coach Carter' (2005), 'The Muppet's Wizard of Oz' (2005), 'John Tucker Must Die' (2006), and others.

In 2009, Ashanti was dropped by her record label. She then started up her own label, Written Entertainment, where she plans to release her fifth album.
