Avatar’ is a science fiction movie written and directed by James Cameron. The film stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez and Stephen Lang. The film takes place in the year 2154, when humans are mining a precious mineral called unobtanium on the lush moon Pandora in the Alpha Centauri star system. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na'vi—a humanoid species which inhabits Pandora. The film's title refers to the genetically engineered Na'vi bodies used by several human characters to interact with the natives of Pandora.

'Avatar' won 2010 Oscars for Best Visual Effects (Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum, Richard Baneham and Andrew R. Jones), Best Art Direction (Rick Carter, Robert Stromberg, and Kim Sinclair) Best Cinematography (Mauro Fiore). It was widely favored to win 'Best Director' and 'Best Picture' but was beat out in those categories by 'The Hurt Locker.'

James Cameron's 'Avatar,' 3-D animated/live action film about the victory of primitive natives on another planet over a greedy corporation, passed 'The Titanic' (also James Cameron's) as the highest grossing movie of all time with $2.7 billion earned.

Avatar’ premiered in London on December 10, 2009, and was released internationally on December 16, and in North America on December 18, to critical acclaim and commercial success. The film broke several box office records during its release and became the highest-grossing film of all time in North America and worldwide, surpassing Titanic,’ which had held the record for the previous 12 years. It also became the first film to gross more than $2 billion.

Following the film's success, Cameron stated that there would be a sequel.

Avatar’ was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
