Bagels

Bagels

Bagels are a popular circular bread most often found in New York, but increasingly, all over the world. They are a delicious chewy bread that is especially good toasted. Bagels came to New York with the thousands of Jewish immigrants from Europe that located there in the early 20th century.

About Bagels

Bagel history goes back a few thousand years. Bagels are first seen in history in the Community Regulations of Kracow, Poland of 1610. It states that the bagel is to be given as a gift to all pregnant women. A better known story of the bagel dates back to 1683 when an Austrian baker made bagels for King Jan Sobieski of Poland in honor of his victory over the Turks. It is said that he fashioned them in the shape of the stirrups.

Regardless of the true origin, the bagel is without a doubt one of the tastiest forms of bread known to man. It comes in many flavors such as cinnamon, cinnamon raison, pumpernickel, 7 grain, salt, everything bagel, blueberry, onion, garlic, poppy seed, sesame seed to name a few. Popular toppings for bagels include cream cheese, lox (cured and smoked salmon), flavored cream cheese spreads, peanut butter, jelly, and butter. You can even use them to make sandwiches or try making them into a pizza too, great snack!

Bagels made their way to the United States via Jewish immigrants, setting up many shops in New York City. Bagels were even controlled by Bagel Bakers Local 338 for decades until the 1960’s when Thomas Lender invented an automated bagel machine. Very few true craftsmen of the bagel industry, who still roll them by hand, are left today. Today New York City still offers the best selection of bagels in the United States which can be found in the many bagel shops throughout the city. You haven’t had a bagel until you have a freshly baked bagel from New York City!
