Baseball

Baseball, which is considered to be America's past time, is a bat and ball sport played between two teams of nine players each. In the United States, professional MLB teams are divided into the National League and American League, which come together for the national championship each year called the World Series.

About Baseball

Baseball is a team sport played with a bat and ball. The goal is to earn runs by hitting a thrown ball with a bat and running a series of bases in a 90 foot squared diamond formation. Runs are scored by either hitting the ball inside the park and advancing runners on bases or by hitting the ball out of the park known as a 'homerun' and running around the bases to home. A 'homerun' is undefensible, meaning that once the ball leaves the park, everyone on base including the batter can run freely to home base scoring runs for their team. The pitcher of the defense tries to strike out hitters therefore not letting them score runs. The goal of the defense is to strike out a batter for an out, catch a fly ball for an out, or tag a runner before he reaches his base for an out. The accumulation of three outs changes sides, therefore the fielding team becomes the batting team and visa versa. This is done 18 times for 9 'innings.' The team with the most runs at the end of 9 innings is declared the winning team.

Organized baseball is played at almost every age group with community park leagues forming in the elementary school and middle school years. High schools sponsor their own baseball teams and colleges recruit players from high school into their own programs as well. It is not uncommon that high schoolers go pro without ever playing at the collegiate level since baseball is a game of skill and natural ability for the most part.
