Bench Press

Bench Press

The bench press begins by lifting the bar off the rack, and lowering it until the bar is motionless on the chest before being pressed under control to the start position.

About Bench Press

The bench press is an exercise that is performed using a bar with an equal amount of weight stacked on each end. It is often as a means to test a person’s upper body strength. Bench press exercises use the pectoralis major and minor (large muscle group making up your chest) and triceps primarily, but also helps develop the anterior deltoid ( front shoulder muscle), and the serratus anterior.

To perform a bench press you first need to lie flat on the bench with your feet flat against the floor. While keeping your shoulders pinched together grasp the bar of weight and slowly lower it to your chest. Next raise the bar above your body until your elbows lock. Return the bar back down to chest level. This is one repetition.

It is very important that you maintain proper form at all times when performing bench presses and never push yourself beyond your means. Bench pressing causes the most gym-related injuries. The most common injury as a result of bench pressing is a front deltoid tear. The tearing of chest muscle is also a common injury. Injuries can be prevented by warming up properly, knowing your weight limits and not going over them, using a spotter, using proper form and technique and using collars on the bar to keep the weights from slipping.
