Best Buy

Best Buy, founded in 1966 by Richard M. Schulze, a man who started by selling home and car stereo equipment, is the leading consumer electronics retailer in the United States. Best Buy offers a large number of computers, electronics, appliances, phones, video games and televisions.

About Best Buy

Best Buy Co., Inc. is a consumer electronics retail chain of stores mainly focused in the United States, but also abroad. There are over 1,150 store locations in the US, Canada, Mexico, China, Puerto Rico, and Turkey. The company also owns the Geek Squad, Magnolia Audion Video, Pacific Sales, RocketFish, and Future Shop brands.

Originally named 'Sound of Music,' the first store opened in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1966 that only sold audio accessories. The name was changed to Best Buy in 1983 and opened its first superstore. After rival Circuit City went out of business in 2009, Best Buy became the largest electronics retailer in the United States, but is still closely rivaled by Fry's Electronics.

The main controversy in Best Buy's history is regarding it's 'Product Service/Replacement Plan.' Customers often reported being misled by employees that any and all damage was covered in the service plan. Anyone who tried bringing in smashed or waterlogged tech was given the boot, and a class action lawsuit is currently pending. Best Buy has since changed their policy to more accurately reflect the claims of the salesmen.
