Bikini Wax

Bikini Wax

Known for the potential pain it can inflict, a bikini wax is a form of hair removal which uses warm wax to pull the hair from the follicle in the pubic region. The wax clings to the hair and is then removed by applying a cloth strip and quickly pulling it away. Bikini waxing originated in Brazil, where bikini bathing suits are legend.

About Bikini Wax

A bikini wax is the process of removing body hair from the pubic region using wax. Females often receive a bikini wax for aesthetic or comfort reasons or to remove hair that would not be covered by swimsuits or undergarments.

There are several styles of bikini waxes. The American, or basic wax, is the removal of any pubic hair that would not be covered by a swimsuit. The French wax removes all hair except for a strip down the center 1 to 1.5 inches in width. The strip left behind is commonly called a ''landing strip.'' A Full Brazilian wax, or Sphinx, is the removal of all hair from the pubic region.

Many salons offer the hair removal service at varying prices. During the wax, the client is given the option to wear her own undergarments, paper undergarments provided by the salon or nothing at all. An antiseptic will be applied to cleanse the area and then powdered to dry all moisture. Warm wax is applied using a spatula in the direction of hair growth. A wax strip, most often made of a cloth called muslin, is placed firmly on top of the wax and pulled off in the opposite direction of hair growth while skin is held taut. After the waxing, a wax remover is used to remove any residue, which is otherwise hard to get off, and a solution is applied to help reduce swelling while soothing and preventing irritation.

If getting waxed in a salon by a stranger is a little uncomfortable, at-home waxing kits can be purchased at most drug, department and beauty stores. Some kits have pre-waxed strips ready for use. Others have wax that must be heated and applied. Be sure to follow all directions on the package completely, and don’t forget to test for an allergic reaction before using any product for the first time.
