About Bill Hicks

Born: William Melvin Bill Hicks, December 16, 1961 to February 26, 1994, Valdosta GA.

Known for: His abrasive and confrontational stand-up routines.

Bill Hicks' social commentary topics ranged from cigarette smoking to the Gulf War and he drew his audience into topical, personal, and occasionally existential themes. He worked very hard to bring important questions to his audience in a way that made them hard to ignore.

He is perhaps the only comedian to have an entire routine removed from The Late Show with David Letterman’ broadcast. Although he performed on the show nearly a dozen times, his final appearance was considered too controversial. On the 10th anniversary of his death, David Letterman had Hick’s mother on the show to talk about Bill and to finally air the censored routine.

In their multiplatinum album AEnima the band Tool famously eulogized him and dedicated the album to him after they became friends when he opened for the band several times during their 1993 Lollapalooza tour.

He released 9 comedy albums and also has 5 video releases.

Bill Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994.
