Billboards

Billboards

Billboards are those huge signs you see on the side of the road and painted on the sides of buildings. They are crucial for advertisers to get the message out about their products to folks wandering city streets or driving down the highway.

About Billboards

Billboards were the first way of advertising used to convey a message to a large audience. The oldest known billboard ad was posted in the Egyptian city of Thebes over 3,000 years ago which offered a reward for a runaway slave. When lithography was invented in the eighteenth century, billboard use expanded and turned into an art form. The first known use of a billboard as an advertising method was when large circus posters were placed on horse-drawn trucks to promote attendance and interest.

In the late 1920's, as more people owned cars and traveled beyond their cities, billboard advertising expanded. The art, design and technologies of billboards expanded at that time as well and grew to all sorts of demographics. Billboards began to include all types of art, including comics, photography and hand-paintings.

Most often, billboards are printed on large poster sheets which are placed on the front of the sign. Billboards have three components to them: the steel frame to hold up the sign, the artwork/sign that displays the advertising message and electrical equipment for lighting. The art is either preprinted on paper or vinyl sheets that are pasted onto the facing, or in some cases, the art is painted directly onto a plywood or canvas facing.
