Birds

Birds

Birds are warm-blooded vertebrates that lay eggs. A bird’s skin is covered with feathers, and all living species have wings made from modified forelimbs, even though some species do not fly. The origin of birds goes back to the Jurassic period. Modern birds have no teeth unlike their predecessors. Birds are found on all seven continents and play an important role in the earth’s ecosystem.

About Birds

Birds are amazing creatures. Some bird species have even been observed making, and using tools. Scientists believe parrots and corvids may be the smartest birds. Parrots are also one of the most popular species of birds kept as pets, because they can mimic human speech. However, parrots are also one of the most popular birds to end up in animal shelters because they can live to be over 100 years old.

Many bird species migrate thousands of miles, navigating by a combination of senses including using the sun as a compass, by using magnetic fields, visual cues and even smell. The Bar-Tailed Godwit has the record for the longest migration of any species, traveling 6,300 miles non-stop. Migration allows birds to find seasonal food supplies and breeding habitats due to seasonal climate change.

There are currently over 1,200 species of bird on the endangered species list, and over 200 on the critically endangered species list. Some of the birds on the critically endangered include Gorgeted Puffleg (hummingbird), thick-billed parrots (extinct in North America except in captivity), Floreana Mockingbird, California Condor, Waved Albatross, Madagascar Fish-eagle and Sapphire Bellied Hummingbirds.
