Boat License

Boat License

A boat license is required in order to operate a boat. Laws regarding boat licenses differ from state to state. Many states require that the applicant show proof of having taken a boating safety course.

About Boat License

A boat license is a document issued to a person by the state in which they reside giving them permission to operate a boat in public waters. The costs and requirements to obtain a boating license vary from state to state.

Many states require a person to take a boater safety course before being permitted to apply for a license. In addition, the passing of the course often allows you a discount on your insurance. The boater safety course will teach the operator how to handle the boat safely, how to read the weather and how to operate safely with other boating traffic. Additionally courses are often offered to those who wish to expand their knowledge further than the basics. These courses are often offered by private companies and many can be taken online. Be sure the course you choose has been approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The age limit required to obtain a boating permit also varies from state to state. In some locations a person must be at least 16 years of age to operate a boat. Others require that a child be at least 12. There are some states that do not have an age requirement.
