Botox

Botox

Botox Cosmetic is a dermatological procedure intended to improve the appearance of wrinkles on the face. A solution is injected into the muscles, blocking nerve impulses at the injection site to decrease muscle movement and diminish the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines. The injections only provide temporary results, however, and must be repeated about every four months.

About Botox

Botox is a pharmaceutical abbreviation of botulinum toxin type A (a chemical that causes botulism, the paralyzation of muscles due to a bacteria), the main ingredient in Botox Cosmetic.

The prescription product is an injection done by a doctor, mainly in the area between the eyebrows, and is intended to diminsh the appearance of moderat to severe frown lines, or the 11 seen between the brows. Botox does this by blocking nerve impulses to the muscles into which it is injected, preventing muscle movement in this area.

The procedure costs about $400 for each session, and the results last about four months.

According to the Botox Cosmetic website, side effects include:

Dry mouth
Discomfort or pain at the injection site
Tiredness
Headache
Neck pain
Eye problems such as double vision, blurred vision, decreased eyesight, drooping eyelids, swelling of your eyelids, and dry eyes
Allergic reactions, symptoms of an allergic reaction to BOTOX® or BOTOX® Cosmetic may include: itching, rash, red itchy welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, or dizziness or feeling faint. Tell your doctor or get medical help right away if you are wheezing or have asthma symptoms, or if you become dizzy or faint.

Botox was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002.
