About Boy Scouts

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States, with over four million members. Since its founding in 1910 as part of the international Scout Movement, more than 110 million Americans have been members of the BSA.

The BSA's goal is to train youth in responsible citizenship, character development, self-reliance, trustworthiness, good citizenship, and outdoors skills, through a variety of activities such as camping, aquatics, hiking and educational programs. For younger members, the Scout method is part of the program to inculcate typical Scouting values such as trustworthiness, good citizenship, and outdoors skills, through a variety of activities such as camping, aquatics, and hiking.

The Scouts started in 1909 when publisher W. D. Boyce was visiting London, where he learned of the Scouting movement through his experience with a British scouting group called the Unknown Scout. Soon after his return to the U.S., Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910. The BSA's stated purpose in 1910 was "to teach patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred (family) values."

The present day BSA's purpose is basically the same but with a few changes to reflect changing times. They now allow girls in their organization and teach tolerance, charity and kindness as traits all scouts should have. However you put it, the Boy Scouts are a great organization with a focus on helping children build character and have fun while doing it.
