Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is cancer that forms in the tissues of the breast. Breast cancer screening is especially important to detect lumps that may be cancerous. Self-examination can be an extremely effective way of detecting breast cancer as well.

About Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is cancer that forms in the tissue of the breast. Cancer.gov estimates that for 2010 there will be:

New cases: 207,090 (female); 1,970 (male)
Deaths: 39,840 (female); 390 (male)

There are two types of breast cancer, invasive and noninvasive. Breast cancer usually begins in the milk ducts but can also begin in the lobules where milk is produced. Although rare, breast cancer can begin in the connective tissue which is called sarcoma. Sarcomas that occur in the breast are called phyllodes tumor and angiosarcoma.

Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare aggressive form of breast cancer that spreads through the breast tissue making it appear red and swollen, often confused with an infection. It is considered advanced and has spread from it’s point of origin. It often affects the lymph nodes.

Treatment for breast cancer varies on the type and stage of your cancer. Some treatments may include hormonal therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery, biological treatments or a combination of these. You can go to the Mayo Clinic website for more complete and detailed information regarding this disease.

Early detection of breast cancer can increase your chances of survival. It is important to do self checks and have mammograms. Stay aware of your breast health and let your doctor know if you notice any changes.
