About Bruce Lee

Known for: Being one of the most iconic action stars of all time, a movie icon, and martial artist.

Bruce Lee was a martial artist, actor, and philosopher who used his tremendous skills to change action films forever.

Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco, but relocated to Hong Kong when he was just a year old. His parents enrolled him in a martial arts school where he learned Wing Chun. Wing Chun focused on close fighting, and being flexible but powerful. Lee spent 5 years in the school. His skills as a fighter and his penchant for getting into trouble caused him more and more trouble, until at 18 he was sent to live in the U.S. to find a safer environment. He finished high school in 1960 in Seattle, Washington.

While attending classes in Washington he met and then married his wife, Linda. He started opening martial arts schools and learning from masters of many different styles of fighting. He created his own style of martial arts that he called Jeet Kune Do,’ which focused on combining the best and most efficient elements of all styles combined with strength training. His skills soon became legendary, and attracted the attention of Hollywood.

Back in Hong Kong, Bruce Lee had acted often, appearing in 20 films, and he appeared in several U.S. TV shows in the late 60’s, most famously as Kato’, the sidekick to the Green Hornet’. He failed to find roles he wanted in Hollywood but during a trip back to Hong Kong discovered that the Green Hornet’ show had made him a huge star there. He was immediately offered leading roles and created The Big Boss’ in 1971, Fist of Fury’ in 1972 (both films broke box office records) and Way of the Dragon’ in which he first introduced the world to Chuck Norris. He then made his most famous film, Enter the Dragon’ and had partially filmed another film when he mysteriously died.

Bruce Lee used his skills to bring beauty and drama to film fighting, and it would not be inaccurate to state that the entire genre of martial arts films might never have entered the mainstream if not for him. His desire to combine techniques from multiple forms of fighting is also the likely source of the entire MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighting league.
