California

California is a state located on the west coast of the United States and is bordered by Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, the Pacific Ocean, and Baja California to the south. California has a mostly Mediterranean climate with rainy and cool winters and dry summers, which the wine industry has profited by. The higher elevation desert areas have hot summers and cold winters. Death Valley, a desert classified as the hottest location in North America, holds a record high of 134 °F set in 1913.

About California

Settlers began arriving in Northern California in the 1820s. The settlers rebelled against Mexican rule during the Bear Flag Revolt. The revolt lasted 26 days and the U.S. Army took control of the area. California was admitted to the Union on September 9, 1850 as the 31st state with a total land area of 163,696 square miles.

The capital city of California is Sacramento, and Los Angeles is the largest city. California is also known as the Golden State with the discovery of gold and Golden Poppies that appear in the spring. The state bird is the California valley quail, the state flower is the California Poppy, and the state tree is the California Redwood. The state motto of California is Eureka ... I have found it!. The motto refers to the discovery of gold in the state.
