Camping

Camping

The object of camping in the developed world is to get out of our normal comfort zone and reconnect with nature. How this is achieved is completely open to interpretation. As a child, setting up a tent in the back yard is just as much of an adventure as taking the summer off to hike the Aplachian Trail with nothing but a knife and a water bottle. It doesn't matter how you camp, just remember to take nothing but photographs and leave nothing but footprints.

About Camping

Camping is totally a free-form activity, and there is not really a wrong way to do it - just safe and unsafe. As in any survival situation, your first priority is shelter. Luckily, we live in the 21st century where we have evolved beyond lean-to's and caves and we have many options for shelter, your only restrictions are how much you want to spend on your shelter and how close you want to get to nature.

A tent is just about the most basic shelter you can buy. They come in many different sizes from light-weight single person models designed for backpacking to multiple-room-multi-family tents. Tents are great because they are cheap, durable and really portable.

Campers would be the next step up from a tent. Pop-up trailers are smaller than fifth-wheel trailers, but provide more of the creature comforts we are used to in 21st century. They have cook-tops, sinks, small beds, tables chairs, electricity, maybe a small toilet. Some campers even have heat, air conditioning and showers.

Motor homes are the most expensive way to camp, as many motor homes cost as much as a house! They not only have cook tops and cabinets, but proper beds, full kitchens, heat, air, satellite TV, electricity; all of the amenities you'd expect to find in a modern home, but in a street legal format.
