About Carbon Dioxide
Carbon Dioxide, or CO2, is the is a gas comprising .03% of the earth's atmosphere. It is a chemical compound composed of two oxygen atoms and a single carbon atom. CO2 is used by plants to make sugar, and is a byproduct of the burning of fossil fuels. The buildup of CO2 is leading to global warming.
Carbon dioxide is sometimes confused with carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. It is an odorless colorless gas that can cause sudden death or illness. It can be found in the combustion from car engines, wood stoves, lanterns, fireplaces, gas stoves, and heating systems to name a few. It becomes deadly when these fumes build up in enclosed areas with no ventilation. It can and will affect humans and animals.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is caused by breathing in the fumes, it can cause death or even brain damage. Carbon monoxide poisoning is the leading cause of accidental deaths in America. There are over 500 deaths a year linked to this each year.
Carbon Monoxide Symptoms
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, nausea, and fatigue. These symptoms are often overlooked because they resemble flu symptoms. If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning immediately leave your home and call 911.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms and Detectors
Carbon Monoxide detectors or Carbon monoxide alarms are a great addition to the usual fire alarms found in your home. These can and will save lives. You can find these alarms at any home improvement store. You can also check with your local fire department or Department for the Aging. Many times these agencies have free fire alarms and carbon monoxide alarms for the elderly and people who need assistance.
