Cats

Cats

Cats are the most popular pet in the world, perhaps because they require less care than a dog. Cats are relatively independent, but they do form strong attachments to people and places and require a steady routine and a good diet in order to be happy and healthy.

About Cats

A cat is a feline who has been domesticated by humans for their companionship as well as their pest hunting skills. They have been documented to have lived with humans for over 9,500 years. People’s love for the furry feline has brought the cat’s status to the most popular pet in the world. There are an estimated 500 million cats in the world today.

Cats are fairly low maintenance pets. They do not require the exercise that dogs do and they often entertain themselves. The litter box is probably the most extensive chore for cat owners as the dirty litter and waste must be cleaned out of the box on a regular basis. If the box is not clean the cat will find other areas to relieve themselves, more than likely not areas you approve of. They do not require bathing as they keep themselves clean by grooming their own fur.

A cat’s diet will mainly consist of commercially prepared cat food. Wet food is recommended by most veterinarians. The wet food contains more of the proteins and meat products that a cat needs compared to dry foods that contain a lot of grains. Cats are carnivorous animals. Dry food is acceptable, but if your cat is prone to urinary tract infections it is in your best interest to switch to wet food. Dry foods have been linked to urinary tract infections in felines. The best food is homemade food. There are many cat food recipes on the web.

A female cat will go into heat multiple times per year, sometimes every 2 weeks. They will mate with more than one male which can give the chance for more than one father per litter of kittens. Cats have the ability to have more than two to three litters of kittens per year. Each litter of can have anywhere from 3 to 5 kittens.

To prevent unwanted pregnancies cat owners should consider spaying their female cats and neutering their male cats. The surgeries are routine and are commonly performed before the cat is 6 months of age. Spaying and neutering your cat also eliminates unwanted sexual behaviors such as male cats spraying urine and female cats yowling while in heat.
