Chaske Spencer is an American actor of Cherokee, Creek, Nez Perce, Sioux, French and Dutch heritage. During his high school years, Chaske (pronounced Chess-Kay) was involved in theater and went by James Spencer. After a year of college, Chaske dropped out to pursue a career in acting. Throughout his life, Chaske struggled with alchohol and drug addictions. He announced he was one year sober in 2009.

Chaske began his career playing traditional Native Americans in movies and the video game Red Dead Revolver. His first feature film role was a small part in the movie Skins (2002), a drama following the difficulties of two Sioux brothers. He increased his exposure on the big screen by playing Eagle Boy in Dreamkeeper (2003), and can be seen opening the movie. Chaske then set himself apart as Voices that Carry in Steven Spielberg's 2005 miniseries, Into the West.

By far his biggest role, and also the role he is best known for, Chaske Spencer landed the part of the werewolf Sam Uley for The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009). Sam Uley is the leader, oldest member, and Alpha, of the La Push werewolf pack. Uley is also the rival to fellow werewolf pack member Jacob Black (played by Taylor Lautner). Chaske reprised the role of Sam Uley in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010) and again in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (2011).
