Christmas Gifts

Christmas Gifts

Christmas gift giving is thought to have originated from the story of the three wise men bearing gifts to the Christ child. In modern days the custom seems to have gotten a little out of control, with people spending thousands of dollars on gifts. Still, the custom is especially fun in the homes of little children who still believe in Santa Claus.

About Christmas Gifts

Christmas is a day that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. It is widely celebrated around the world in many different ways. One of the most common traditions of Christmas is gift giving. People give gifts to the important people in their lives to show that they care.

The origins of gift giving are believed to date back to that fateful day that Jesus was born. In the Bible is the story of the three wise men from the East traveling to Jerusalem bearing gifts for the newborn Christ. They brought with them gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. It is thought that the tradition carried on, emulating the unselfishness of Christ.

Choosing a gift for a loved one can be difficult. Many people search high and low for the perfect gift that gives the recipient the feeling that the gift giver really knows them and cares. When trying to decide what to give take into consideration that person's hobbies and activities. Your relationship with the recipient should also be considered. The best gift is something that reflects that person’s personality but will also surprise the person. Remember, it’s not about the money you spent on the gift, it’s about the thought you put into it.

If your circle of friends and family is very large you may want to consider some sort of gift swap. Exchanging names is a very popular choice. Everyone buys one gift for the person whose name they were given. Another fun way to exchange gifts is to do a Yankee Swap. Everyone brings a wrapped gift and they take turns either choosing an unwrapped gift or stealing an opened gift from someone else. Another version of the game has players bringing wrapped gently used items from their homes rather than purchasing something new to give.

Many people have gone beyond gift exchange to share something to the poor and needy on Christmas. Some give the gift of offering a donation in the recipient's name as a Christmas gesture that may be more meaningful than adding more things to the pile.
