Christmas Ideas

Christmas comes every year, but that doesn't mean you have to do the same celebrations every year! Of course, there are some family and cultural traditions that make Christmas special precisely because they are unchanging. But 'changing up' your Christmas celebrations is sometimes necessary as families grow. Here are some ideas for making your Christmas fun.

About Christmas Ideas

Looking for some ideas on how to make your Christmas festive and fun? There are tons of different ways to celebrate the holiday season. ChaCha has some great Christmas ideas to share with you. Who knows, maybe they will become family traditions that you repeat year after year!

Yankee Swap – Have a large family? It can be very costly to buy everyone a gift. Instead, invite everyone to participate in the Yankee Swap. Set a dollar limit and everyone brings a wrapped gift whose price does not go over that limit. Everyone then chooses a number out of a hat. Number one goes first. They may choose any gift they like and open it. Next is the person holding number 2. They have the choice of choosing an unwrapped gift or stealing the gift that person number one opened.

When they have completed their turn the person holding number 3 then takes their turn. Number 3 has the option of choosing an unwrapped gift or stealing a gift from a person who has already opened one. The process continues until the last person chooses. Once the last person takes their turn the person who went first then has the choice to steal any gift they want or keep the one they are holding.

Cookie Exchange - What Christmas is complete without Christmas cookies? Everyone loves to have an array of Christmas cookies displayed over the holidays but who wants to be stuck in the kitchen making dozens of varieties of cookie? Instead, invite all of your friends over for a cookie exchange. Instruct each friend to bring in one style of cookie plus a large tin or tray to carry cookies home in.

Calculate how many dozen cookies each guest should bring by multiplying ½ dozen times the number of people attending. The guests should also bring an additional dozen for eating during the party. Ask each guest to email you a copy of the recipe they used one week before the party. Take those recipes and create a booklet for your guests to take home. At the party everyone swaps cookies with each other and takes home cookies to share plus a nice recipe booklet so they can bake all those yummy treats later.

Christmas Eve – Christmas Eve is a great time for family traditions. Start the night with a great meal Prime rib is always an excellent main course. Once dinner is cleaned up, get out that sugar cookie dough that you made earlier that day. Roll out the dough and use some festive cookie cutters to make some great shapes. While you are baking have some Christmas music playing that you can all sing along with. Once the cookies are baked and on the rack to cool off pile the family into the car for some Christmas light viewing.

Every town and city should be packed with Christmas lights. When you return the cookies will be cooled and ready to decorate. By now the evening should be winding down so everyone can get to sleep before Santa makes his visit. Before hopping into bed be sure to put a couple of those fresh baked cookies onto a plate with a nice tall glass of milk for the big guy!

Christmas Cards – Gather together all of your best friends to have a Christmas card making party. Together you can make Christmas cards for those in the military serving overseas, nursing home residents, homeless people and elderly folks who can’t get around too well anymore. All you need is some colorful cardstock, Christmas stickers, stamps and cutouts, gel pens and some creativity. You will make someone’s holiday a lot brighter by letting them know someone out there cares.

Make home-made ornaments – Home-made ornaments can be a beautiful addition to any Christmas tree. They can also be passed down from generation to generation. You can find many kits to make ornaments at your local craft stores. One of the most popular is the glass globe. A plain globe can be made beautiful with the addition of a little paint. Just squirt a few drops of acrylic paint inside the globe and swirl around to make beautiful designs! You can also enhance it with glitter or rub-on stickers.
