About Christopher Nolan

Known for: Directing 'Batman Begins', 'The Dark Knight', and the psychological-thrillers 'Momento' and 'Inception'.

Chrstopher Nolan is an award-winning British-born director, writer, producer, and founder of Syncopy Films. Nolan is critically acclaimed for his reviving and re-imagining the Batman movie franchise. Nolan directed his first movie, 'Following', in 1998. 'Following' was a success, due in part to its non-linear, non-chronological storytelling, and allowed Nolan to direct a movie based on a story written by his brother, screenwriter Jonathan Nolan. 'Memento' (2000) became a cult-hit, and like 'Following', is told out of chronological order, telling one story from the beginning forwards and the second from the end backwards, revealing new twists along the way.

In 2003, Nolan pushed Warner Bros. to give him the opportunity to revive and direct the new Batman movie. Though relatively unknown at the time, Nolan got the job. In 2005, 'Batman Begins', starring Christian Bale as Batman/Bruce Wayne released to critic's raving reviews and one of the year's largest box office returns. The real-world superhero direction which Nolan took connected with audiences were reserved to most comic book movies being anything but realistic, and the new Batman became a hit.

Nolan's second Batman film, 'The Dark Knight' (2008) introduced Batman's most iconic villain, the Joker, played by Heath Ledger. However, shortly after the filming of Dark Knight, Ledger died of an accidental overdose. 'The Dark Knight' released to enormous hype, and earned critics' praise and broke box office records. It set the opening weekend record at $158 million, became the second highest grossing film of all time domestically, and the fourth-highest worldwide. Ledger's sinister and sadistic Joker stole the movie. That year, Nolan accepted the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor on behalf of Ledger.

Nolan is directing and writing the third and, what is rumored to be, last Batman movie in the series. 'The Dark Knight Rises' is scheduled to release July 20, 2012.

Nolan's directing credits include: 'Following' (1998), 'Memento' (2000), 'Insomnia' (2002), 'Batman Begins' (2005), 'The Prestige' (2006), 'The Dark Knight' (2008), and 'Inception' (2010), starring Leonardo DiCaprio. 'Inception', released July 16, 2010, and is Nolan's first movie since his debut picture, 'Following', which is entirely original, written and directed by himself.
