Cigarette Smoke

Cigarette Smoke

Cigarette smoke is not only toxic to smokers, but secondhand smoke has been found to cause cancer as well. The movement to assure a smoke-free environment in offices, bars and restaurants has grown out of the knowledge of the dangers of cigarette smoke.

About Cigarette Smoke

Cigarette smoke contains over 4000 different chemicals including nicotine, DDT, arsenic, carbon monoxide, tar and formaldehyde. 43 of these chemicals are known to be cancer causing agents.

The cigarette looks like it is only tobacco but many people do not realize that is combined with many chemicals and flavoring agents to create the final product. Even the most basic cigarette can be formed from over 600 ingredients. These ingredients are released into the air in a smoke when lit. The toxins are inhaled by not only the smoker, but also by those around them. Many of the chemicals found in the smoke remain in the lungs after the smoke is exhaled.

Studies have proven that repeated exposure to cigarette smoke can cause lung cancer, emphysema and cardiovascular disease. The chances of developing these diseases begin decrease when a person stops smoking. The damages caused by the cigarette smoke are often reversible with the quitting of smoking.
