Coffee

Coffee

Coffee is the engine of civilization. That little tiny bean with the caffeine has been part of the working day for hundreds of years. Even cowboys enjoyed coffee around the campfire.

About Coffee

Coffee! Coffee! Coffee! I love coffee! What else needs to be said? Actually, quite a bit, the history of coffee goes back thousands of years.

Coffee is loved and consumed around the world every minute of the day. Americans consume around 400 million cups per year. In the United States, coffee imports are estimated to reach $4 Billion per year. Coffee ingestion on average is about a third that of tap water in most of North America and Europe. In total, 6.7 million metric tons of coffee were produced annually in 1998–2000, and the forecast is a rise to 7 million metric tons annually by 2010. (Source: coffeefacts.com)

Coffee was discovered by goats. In the Ethiopian province of Kaffa, during the 9th century, a shepherd noticed that his goats were dancing merrily about after consuming the coffee berries in a pasture. Coffee then made its way to Egypt, Yemen and later Persia, Turkey and northern Africa by the 15th century. By the mid 1600’s coffee was being enjoyed throughout Europe.

The origin of the word coffee is said to have come from the Arabic word qahwah. Then around the 1600’s the Italian term caffe came from the Turkish word kahveh which came from qahwah. Other researchers believe the term coffee came directly from the Ethiopian province of Kaffa.

Today you can find a coffee shop on just about every corner in a busy city, whether it's a Starbucks or a Dunkin Donuts. You can also find a coffee pot or coffee maker in just about every home in America. Coffee is almost as essential as water in the daily lives of many people. It is also believed to have some medical benefits as an antioxidant, relief for asthma sufferers and may even aid in reducing kidney stones. So drink up and enjoy!
