College football is one of the most popular sports in North America, watched by millions of fans each Saturday. The college football regular season typically runs from early-September to mid-December, and concluding with bowl games.

About College Football

The first college football game was played in 1869 between Rutgers College and the College of New Jersey, now known as Rutgers University and Princeton University. Today, college football is one of the most popular sports in all of North America, played at over one-thousand higher education institutions in the United States.

The NCAA division I-A college football regular season begins in early-September and ends in early-December. The typical college football team plays 12 games in their regular season. Following the regular season, NCAA Bowl Championship Series (BCS) plays 'bowl' games in favor of playoffs. The later bowl games are the most popular and the most prestigious.

The 2011 college football regular season began September 1. The final game of the regular season will be the annual Army/Navy game played on December 10 with the bowl season (as the collection of bowl games has become known) to follow.

The Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game will be played on January 9, 2012 at the Superdome in New Orleans.

- The forward pass was first introduced to college football in 1906.
- The longest loosing streak belongs to Prairie View College who lost 80-games during the 1990s.
- The longest winning streak is 47 games, set by the Oklahoma Sooners from 1954-57.
- The most lopsided victory was back in 1916 between the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Cumberland University.Georgia Tech scored 32 touchdowns to win 222-0; Cumberland only had one offensive play for positive yards.
- The Michigan Wolverines have won 842 games since they started playing in 1879, most in NCAA history.
- The Princeton Tigers have won the most National Championships with 28.
