Color Spectrum

The color spectrum is the range of colors that are visible to the human eye when white light is refracted through a prism. There is both a visible spectrum and an invisible spectrum of color.

About Color Spectrum

A color spectrum is the distribution of light through a spectrum. The light shining through the prism looks like a rainbow.

Newton’s color spectrum amazed artists because it showed that light was responsible for color. Newton refracted white light through a prism which separated the colors to red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. Newton himself drew the first color wheel which was used by artists.

Bees and other species are able to see invisible light. For example, bees can see ultraviolet light, and this helps them find nectar in flowers. Birds are also able to see ultraviolet light, and some birds have markings on their wings that are only visible in the ultraviolet spectrum.
