About Comic-Con

Comic-Con was founded by a comics fan, Shel Dorf, when he moved to San Diego in 1970. He put together a one-day event on March 21, 1970, hoping to put on larger events in the future. This event was called the Golden State Comic-Minicon. About five months later, he followed up his first event with a three-day comics convention which he named the Golden State Comic-Con on August 1-3, 1970. This was held at the US Grant Hotel with around 300 people in attendance. The convention moved locations around San Diego to various hotels, meeting halls and even the University of California, San Diego until finally ending up at the San Diego Convention Center in 1991.

Comic-Con International is now a non-profit organization, with the proceeds going towards funding the event and others that it puts on, including the Alternative Press Expo and WonderCon.
