Computer

A computer is a programmable machine that responds to a set of instructions and can execute a program. The major parts of a computer are memory (RAM), a data storage device (hard drive), input device (keyboard or mouse), output device (monitor), and the central processing unit. Computers have been around longer than one might think.

About Computer

The earliest programmable analog computer was an astronomical clock invented in 1206 by Al-Jazari. It was essentially a cuckoo clock, with doors opening every hour that allowed robotic musicians to emerge and play music. It also displayed lunar and solar orbits, and the zodiac. The first recognizable computers were invented in the 1800’s, and focused mostly on calculation.

In 1936 Alan Turing invented his Turing machine, which manipulated symbols on a strip of tape. It is considered to be the blueprint for the modern day digital computer. Though it was developed as an idea and not to be a functional machine, it heralded the switch from analog to digital, allowing computers to perform more complex operations.

Today there are several types of computer in use:

*The personal computer – a small single user machine consisting of a microprocessor, keyboard, monitor and hard drive storage. This is what you find in most people’s homes.
* The workstation – a more powerful single user machine with the same elements as a personal computer. Used mostly in an office setting.
* The minicomputer – a multi-user computer that can support over 100 users simultaneously.
* The mainframe – a powerful machine that can support thousands of users simultaneously.
* The supercomputer - an extremely powerful and fast machine performing millions of operations per second.
