Crime Rate

Crime Rate

The crime rate of a neighborhood, town or city is usually expressed in crimes per capita, or per thousand persons. Small towns with a few murders per year can seem especially violent due to the small denominator, which creates a high 'rate' of crime. Be sure to read crime statistics carefully as they can be deceptive.

About Crime Rate

One of the most important things to consider when looking at moving to a location, or even going on vacation, is the crime rate of an area. Crime rates are calculated in two ways: information collected by police, hospitals and other official organizations, such as insurance companies and by surveys.

Between the two methods, it gives a fairly accurate picture of crime in an area. However, the surveys are less accurate as they reply on people honestly reporting things that have happened that haven't been reported to the authorities, versus hard data that is collected based on actual reports to the police, hospitals, and insurance companies. There are three main areas that are covered in most crime rate reports which are offenses, offenders, and victims.

Many reports will be broken down by property and violent crimes. Then can be broken down into the categories of murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny theft and vehicle theft. It is helpful to compare the rates of where you live to where you are moving, so if you know how things are where you live, you get a better idea, beyond just what the numbers show.

The crime rate is always in flux. However, being aware of the trends and what cities have the highest, and lowest, rates, you are better prepared to make important decisions about your family. There are many neighborhoods that are more dangerous than others in the same city. Some reports will break down by neighborhoods, so you can even pinpoint what side of town you should select.
