Dandruff

Dandruff

Dandruff is a minor condition but can cause embarrassment when it is excessive. Washing the hair with dandruff shampoo can help. Some think that certain diets can also contribute to dandruff.

About Dandruff

Dandruff affects the scalp and causes flakes of skin to appear. This is a common condition. Our skin cells are always shedding and renewing themselves. When the skin cells on our scalp are renewed the old ones are pushed to the surface and out of the scalp.

If a person has dandruff, that means that the renewal is faster and more dead skin is shed. This is what makes the dandruff more noticeable. Dandruff can also occur if the scalp is frequently exposed to extreme temperatures.

Dandruff can be chronic (long term) or it could be the result of certain triggers. Some people with dandruff may also experience an irritation and redness of the scalp.

If there is excessive flaking, it may be caused by an underlying illness or condition, such as psoriasis which is a fungal infection, seborrheic dermatitis, or even head lice.

A common myth is that people think that their dandruff is caused by their scalp being too dry. They try to deal with this by not washing their hair with shampoo, or wash it less often, believing that washing worsens the problem. But in reality, dandruff differs from a dry scalp in that it usually gets better when you shampoo more frequently (with the right kind of shampoos).

A lot of people with dandruff find it usually improves as they get older.

It is estimated that about 50% of people in Western Europe and North America suffer from some form of dandruff.

Dandruff is more common in men than in women, and in people with oily skin. Dandruff does not cause hair loss nor does it contribute to it.

Some studies have suggested that diets that are too salty, sugary or spicy and accompanied by excessive alcohol may cause dandruff.

A physician should be consulted if the itching and redness becomes too severe. It may be a sign of an infection.
