David Letterman is a popular late night comedian and television host, best known for 'The Late Show with David Letterman'. He is also a famous long-time rival to Jay Leno, and piled on the jokes after Conan O'Brien departed 'The Tonight Show'.

David Letterman is an American comedian, talk show host, and producer. He grew up and went to school in Indianapolis, and graduated from Ball State University in 1969.

From 1969 to 1975 he worked in radio and in TV, gaining local notoriety as the most unpredictable and funny weatherman in Indianapolis. In 1975 he left for Los Angeles to try to make a career as a comedian. He wrote for several comics and worked doing stand up before getting guest spots on different variety shows and sitcoms. In 1978, he caught the attention of Johnny Carson, the long-time host of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson’ on NBC and was soon a show regular and would sub for Carson.

In 1982 NBC gave him a late night show immediately following Carson’s show, Late Night with David Letterman’, which became a huge success. Letterman brought an absurdist humor and clever interviews to his show that created a devoted audience.

Letterman eventually ran into problems with NBC, and in 1993 he moved to the CBS Network with the show, Late Show with David Letterman’.

Letterman is an icon of the late night talk show industry. Besides his own show his production company, World Wide Pants Inc.’ is responsible for several other shows, including The Bonnie Hunt Show’ and The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn’. He has consistently been one of the top rated shows in late night television for nearly 3 decades.
