Delaware

Delaware is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States bordered by Pennsylvania, the Delaware River, Delaware Bay, New Jersey, Maryland, and the Atlantic Ocean. The state has a total of three counties: New Castle, Kent, and Sussex. Delaware has a climate in a transitional zone between a humid subtropical climate and a continental climate. The southern part of the state enjoys more milder temperatures than the northern part.

About Delaware

The Dutch were the first settlers in the area now known as Delaware. The settlers setup a trading post at Zwaanendael, near the site of Lewes in 1631. After a year all of the settlers were killed in disputes with Indian tribes in the area. Swedes later setup a colony and trading posts, New Sweden, in 1638. The colony lasted 17 years.

In 1655 the Dutch conquered the New Sweden colony incorporating it into the Dutch New Netherland. In 1664 the Dutch were conquered by English ships and ownership of the area was passed on to William Penn in 1682. Delaware was admitted to the union on December 7, 1787 as the 1st state in the Union. The state has a total land area of 2,490 square miles.

The capital city of Delaware is Dover with Wilmington being the largest city in the state. Delaware is also known as the The First State, being the 1st state admitted to the Union. The state bird is the Blue Hen Chicken, the state flower is the Peach Blossom, and the state tree is the American Holly. The state motto is Liberty and Independence.
