Dinosaur

Dinosaur

Dinosaurs are the beasts who used to roam the earth in the era from the late Triassic period (approximately 230 million years ago) until the end of the Cretacious period, about 65 million years ago.

About Dinosaur

Dinosaurs have fascinated people from the time the first fossil evidence was unearthed. These “terrible lizards” have been found on every continent, including Antarctica. They have been featured in books, cartoons, television, and movies. Much of what we know of these extinct creatures comes from archeological digs and comparing the finds to modern animals.

Just like modern animals, dinosaurs are broken down into three groups: carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores. Within each group are various dinosaurs of different types and sizes. Not all dinosaurs were the huge beasts as depicted in the movies. Some were even about the size of a chicken, like the carnivorous Compsognathus. The largest dinosaur was the Argentinosaurus, which was an herbivore that was 120 feet long, or about the length of 3 school buses.

Some of the most famous types of dinosaurs of course are the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the Triceratops, Stegosaurus, and Brontosaurus. However, the Brontosaurus never really existed. It turns out that it was really an Apatosaurus that simply had the wrong head attached to it, but most people still tend to refer to the giant long necked dinosaurs with the old name. New discoveries are made all the time, adding to the knowledge about the long gone dinosaurs.

Two of the newest discoveries are the Utahceratops gettyi and the Kosmoceratops richardsoni, both are a horned dinosaur. They were found in Utah at the Grand Staircase-Escalate National Park and haven't been found anywhere else. They are probably related to the Triceratops. However they appeared to have as many as 15 horns, not just 3, like the Triceratops.
