Dow Jones

Dow Jones

Dow Jones is one of the most recognized financial information and publishing firms in the world. Founded in 1882, the company has grown into a multi-national and multi-billion dollar per year firm. Some of the Dow Jones products include the Wall Street Journal and the Dow Jones Index, which is also seen as a major gauge of Wall Street activity.

About Dow Jones

The Dow Jones Industrial average, also known as the DJIA, or just 'The Dow', is an index that shows how 30 large, publicly owned U.S. companies have traded during a standard trading session in the stock market

Dow Jones & Company was founded in 1882 by three reporters, Charles Dow, Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser.

Within the first year, Dow Jones began publishing a newspaper titled, 'Journal', which contained various information bits about companies and need-to-know facts about everyday life. As the company expanded, they felt it was time to give the 'Journal' a make-over and transformed it into what is now 'The Wall Street Journal'.

As the company grew, Dow Jones began creating new products and, in 1997, created the Dow Jones Indexes, which the company is now most famous for.

The Dow Jones Indexes produces, maintains, licenses and markets indexes through the stock market. As of September 2010, the Dow Jones indexes over 800 licensees who issue more than 24,000 products.

The Dow Jones Indexes also provides information relative to stocks and the economy to CNBC and their own radio network, Wall Street Journal Radio Network.
