Dr Pepper

Dr Pepper

Dr Pepper is America's oldest soft drink brand. It was introduced in 1895 in Waco, Texas by a drug store owner named Wade Morrison, who possibly named the drink after Dr. Charles Pepper, the father of a girl he was once in love with. Dr. Pepper was served in St. Louis at the 1904 World's Fair right along with the first ice cream cones, hot dog rolls and hamburger buns. In 2008 the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group was established and is one of North America's leading beverage, manufacturing, bottling and distribution companies with over 50 brands of sodas, juices, teas, mixers and waters.

About Dr Pepper

The U.S. Patent Office recognizes Dec. 1, 1885 as the first time Dr Pepper was served. The carbonated treat didn't hit the national circuit until the 1904 Louisiana Purchase exposition, but that same year it was served at the World's Fair. Its introduction in 1885 predates Coca-Cola by one year.

Dr Pepper was formulated by pharmacist Charles Alderton in Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas. The first big taste test was performed by the store's owner Wade Morrison, who liked it and began serving it in his store. Alderton gave the formula to Morrison, who named it Dr Pepper.

Where the name Dr Pepper came from is up for debate. The name could have come from the pep the beverage gives the drinker from sugar and caffeine, which seems plausible as most sodas were sold as energizing brain tonics at the time.

Many people believe there was also a real Dr. Pepper. The most likely candidate is Dr. Charles T. Pepper of Rural Retreat, Virginia. The story goes that Morrison named the drink after Pepper for giving him his first job, or to get permission to marry his daughter. However, Rural Retreat was a long way from where Morrison lived, and Pepper's daughter was 8 years old when he relocated to Waco. So that doesn't seem very likely.

The more likely candidate for Dr. Pepper's namesake is Dr. Pepper of Christiansburg, Virginia. Morrison did work in his store as a pharmacy clerk, and this Dr. Pepper had age-appropriate daughters.

In reality, it doesn't matter who Dr Pepper is named after; all that matters is that those delicious 23 flavors keep flowing.
