About Droid

The Motorola Droid released on November 6, 2009, was Verizon’s answer to the iPhone. Before release, starting in October 2009, Verizon released a number of commercials mocking the iPhone and its lack of multitasking.

The Droid comes with a 3.7-inch touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, 5 megapixel camera, 16GB MicroSD card, and a sliding QWERTY keyboard. The Droid runs on the Android OS version 2.0.1. The Droid cost $199.99 with a new 2 year activation plan through Verizon or $149.99 for existing customers with a 2 year renewal.

The Android mobile operating system is a version of Linux that was developed by Android Inc., and purchased by Google. It now belongs to the Open Handset Alliance, a business alliance of 65 technology businesses who are developing open standards for mobile. On September 23, 2008 Google released the Android 1.0 SDK for developers to create applications for use on the Android OS.

Now many other manufacturers are creating Droid phones with Samsung leading the pack with their Galaxy line. All good news for us consumers!
