Earth Day

Earth Day

Earth Day, always held on April 22nd, is a national holiday created to celebrate the Earth and environment. The first Earth Day was in 1970, and was a response to the environmental crisis at the time, which included extremely polluted water and air. The Environmental Protection Agency was created the same year as a result of activism and widespread popular support for cleaning up the environment.

Earth Day began in 1970 due to the efforts of then U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson and other people concerned about an environmental crisis centered on air and water quality. Nelson noticed more and more Americans were driving V8 engines with leaded fuel. Everyone noticed the choking smog and birds dying from indiscriminate pesticide use. Through several marches, rallies, and initiatives Earth Day was created. The Environmental Protection Agency was created the same year.
