About Elton John

Known for: Singer, songwriter, pianist, and activist

In 1961, Reginald Kenneth Dwight formed his first band called Bluesology. The band did some touring and was later picked up by Long John Baldry as his backing band. It was from this association that Reginald Dwight found his stage name. He decided he wanted to be called Elton John, a combination borrowed from Bluesology saxophonist Elton Dean and Long John Baldry.

After leaving Bluesology to embark on a solo career, Elton was introduced to Bernie Taupin. The two began working together as songwriters for Dick James, writing music for pop stars. Their style of writing together was unique. Never would they write together. Taupin would write the lyrics in one room and then he would give them to Elton who would compose the music to them in another room. Soon the duo began writing songs for Elton to record. Within a short period of time they released many albums including Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy’ which debuted at number one on the Billboard Music Charts. During this time, Elton John became famous as much for his music as his flamboyant costumes and glasses.

In addition to his music, Elton John is often seen performing at and hosting events to raise money for AIDS research and prevention. He began this charitable work after he lost his friends Ryan White and Freddie Mercury to the disease. In 1992, he founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation which helps to fund programs geared toward prevention, eliminating discrimination against those with AIDS and providing services to people living with or at risk of contracting the disease.

As an openly gay man, Elton John wed his partner David Furnish in a civil ceremony on December 21, 2005 in Guildhall, Windsor. The ceremony was a small one. Only the photographer and her husband, the couple’s parents and their beloved dog were in attendance. After the ceremony Elton and David celebrated with their many friends at their mansion in Berkshire.

On October 19, 2010, Elton John released a collaboration album with Leon Russell called 'The Union.'
