About England Soccer

Premier League

The Premier League was founded in 1992 after England's top clubs broke away from the Football League. The top clubs broke away as an effort to increase their income at the expense of the lower quality teams. Relationships with the Football League are maintained through the relegation process. This process allows the top three teams from a league to move up to the next league, while the bottom three teams are sent down a division.

The Premier League is contested between 20 clubs each season. The title is usually a four team race between Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool.

The Football League

The Football League consists of the three divisions (Championship, League One, and League Two). The Football League ranks seconds in the hierarchy of English soccer. The League consists of 72 clubs that are evenly split among the three divisions.
