Fantasy Football

Fantasy Football

Fantasy Football is a fantasy sports game in which a group of people assume the roles of a football team owners. These 'fantasy' teams are made into a mock competitive league. The 'owners' pick real life players and use a points-earning system based on the statistics of the real football players.

About Fantasy Football

Players for fantasy football leagues are typically chosen from the NFL or NCAA by the fantasy team owners in a mock draft. The positions are filled in just as in real football. For example one picks a running back, a quarterback, a wide receiver etc.

Depending on how well the players do in real life the fantasy owner earns points to compete with the other owners in their mock league. It works something like this, if an owners chosen quarterback throws to a wide receiver for 3 touchdowns then he is awarded a set amount of points for these real-life TD passes. The owner who has chosen the wide receiver who caught the passes also earns a set amount for these catches. Each week points are tallied up and the fantasy leagues' teams who are pitted against each other are awarded wins and losses.

At the end of the fantasy season, win-loss records determine the ranking and what teams will make it into a fantasy playoff bracket. Most fantasy leagues use the last weekends of the real life regular season for their own fantasy playoffs, this determines the fantasy league’s champion for the season. Sometimes these leagues are played to collect cash prizes and involve a buy in at the beginning of the season.

It is estimated that nearly 30 million people participate in fantasy football leagues each year!
